When you think of fly fishing near New Orleans, Louisiana, what is it that comes to mind? Based on what I hear from most anglers around the country, you would probably think of the cool air of fall and winter on your face as you hunt for giant bull redfish. We definitely have some great weather days accompanied by some fantastic fishing in the fall and winter, but you're shooting yourself in the foot if you think that's the only good time to fish the Louisiana marsh! Spring and summer can produce INCREDIBLE fishing opportunities! The temperatures may be hot, but so is the fishing!
I could sit here and compare the seasons along with the fishing opportunities each season presents, but it doesn't really matter. The great thing about south Louisiana fishing is that it's fantastic year-round!. Sure, the temperatures are different, the tides are different, the main food sources may change, the winds are typically different, the behavior of the fish is different, etc., but with the knowledge of an experienced guide you can have the great fly fishing and light tackle fishing all year.
So when you're planning your fishing trip to Louisiana, don't limit yourself to just one or two seasons. Know that you can come at any time during the year, fish with an experienced guide, and have an incredible time targeting incredible fish such as slot and bull redfish from the interior marsh out to the barrier islands, giant black drum tailing in shallow water, huge alligator gar looking for something to sink their teeth into, and more.

These photos above are just a few shots from a single solo trip I recently took for a guide's day off. Lots of redfish 10-30 lbs along with many big black drum 20-40 lbs. Even hooked a few big alligator gar too, with the one in the picture being about 4 1/2 feet long. Some of the gar we find can be 7 feet or longer! Summer often brings light winds, smooth water, and a scenic sky, but every now and then we get to see isolated storms brew in the distance. They are pretty awesome to watch and are usually avoidable so we can find fishable conditions around them. These crappy cell phone pictures do them no justice.
