My film, 29° NOLA, has been released to the public for about 3 weeks now and has been viewed over 14,400 times as of now just on Vimeo! I've got a lot of positive feedback from viewers and I can't thank you all enough for your kind words and support for the film and for Southern Fly Expeditions. I hope the film continues to reach many more thousands of viewers around the world and I can't wait for the next film to do even better.
29° North is the approximate latitude of the southern most point of the Louisiana marsh, which is at the Mississippi River delta. NOLA is the abbreviation of New Orleans, LA... And so "29° NOLA" came to be.
Southern Fly Expeditions can be in any of the marsh in southeast Louisiana (east and west of the MS River) to the Mississippi state line and from New Orleans down to the Mississippi River delta and Gulf of Mexico.
Louisiana Fly Fishing Film
I want to take a moment to talk a little about the film.... I contacted C1Films' Frankie Marion back in Spring 2015 and basically just told him "Hey, I want to do a fly fishing film here in Louisiana" and his response was "Hey, so do I!" And so the planning began.
I had some things in mind for the film. I wanted something big, something to grab attention, something to show what we have to offer, something more. Frankie and I worked on our schedules and it seemed like the only time that worked well for him was during my busiest season, which isn't necessarily a great thing for business. Either way, we worked it out, got some anglers together and made it happen.
Bull Redfish on Poppers
Fly fishing for bull redfish on poppers in Louisiana is something that a lot of people get excited about and offers a great visual experience, hence why films featuring redfish on poppers are so popular. As the days got closer to filming the weather forecast was looking bad... REALLY bad. Meteorologist were calling for clouds and 20-50mph winds! We got some clouds and we definitely got the wind they predicted, but fortunately for us we had about 2 days of the best conditions you could possibly ask for. Knowing that I only had 2 days to work with I had to make sure I capitalized on the short time we had and trust that Frankie would do the same. These 2 days turned out to be epic!
We targeted single redfish the first day and did really well despite the cloud cover. Knowing where the fish should be and how to target them in less than favorable conditions is important. Having gin clear water sure does help and makes it really fun when you can see a golden beast cruising even in the dimmest light. After a great day 1, the sun came out and the wind laid down so we went after the schools of redfish. They were right where they should've been.
We got an insane amount of footage of bull redfish crushing our poppers with some big jack crevalle and even alligator gar mixed in along with some good aerial, wildlife, and general landscape footage. I'm pretty sure we could have easily made an hour long film using only the best parts of the footage, but not many people would be willing to sit there for an hour and watch it. You know, because their boss may not like that they took an hour break from work, which is a good reason to keep it under 15 minutes. ;-)
If you haven't seen the film, you should definitely check it out below. If you like the film, please share it with your friends and be prepared for more to come. This is just the beginning and it only gets better from here!
If you'd like to get on some great fly fishing for redfish in the Louisiana marsh near New Orleans, give me shout! We also target other species too, such as big black drum, jack crevalle, alligator gar, sheepshead, sharks, etc. And we also offer light tackle / spin fishing so if fly fishing isn't your thing or the conditions aren't favorable for fly fishing just know that we've got you covered and we're going to have a good time on the water!
